While you can check out our blog on deep cleaning a dishwasher here (also something to consider every so often), your dishwasher is a workhorse and needs regular upkeep. Here are some tips and things to keep in mind so that your dishwasher doesn’t harbor any funky buildup from bacteria to mold:
Regular Cleaning of the Filter The filter in your dishwasher catches food particles and prevents them from redepositing on your dishes. Over time, it becomes clogged and gross, affecting the dishwasher’s performance. Clean it! How? Check out this quick video clip and/or:
Wipe Down the Door Seals The seals around the dishwasher door can collect grime and mold, leading to unpleasant odors and buildup. Use a damp cloth and dishwashing soap to wipe the seals. Pay special attention to the areas around the hinges. Repeat monthly.
Run a Vinegar Cycle We love white distilled vinegar here at Armadillo. Vinegar is a natural disinfectant that can help remove grease, grime, and mineral deposits from your dishwasher.
Use Baking Soda for Extra Freshness Baking soda is a deodorizer and works like a charm. Sprinkle a cup of baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher and run a short hot water cycle. *this can be done after a vinegar cycle for a one-two punch of cleaning power.
Interior + Exterior Food debris can accumulate inside the dishwasher – don’t neglect to pick out the particles so they don’t rot in there. Wipe down the walls and racks with a damp microfiber cloth as part of regular cleaning. Hand wash the cutlery basket and utensil holders with sponge and soap. As for the outside, wipe the exterior with a soft cloth and a non-toxic all-purpose spray; avoid using abrasive cleaners that could damage the finish.
**Pro Tip!** Every time you run the dishwasher and empty it, keep the door open so all the steam releases and keep it open until the inside is completely dry to keep mold at bay.
