💧 Fridge water dispenser? Must. Clean.

No shade. But, have you cleaned the refrigerator water dispenser lately? We all need clean water. And keeping your refrigerator water dispenser clean is essential for ensuring the water tastes fresh and remains free from muck and contaminants. Over time, mineral deposits, bacteria, and mold can build up within the dispenser, affecting the quality (and taste!) of the water. Here’s a guide to help you through the process!

Why It’s Important to Clean Your Water Dispenser

Water dispensers are prone to buildup from minerals, mold, and bacteria, which can taint the water and even lead to health issues if left uncleaned. A regular cleaning schedule prevents these issues and improves the dispenser’s longevity.

What You’ll Need

How To:

Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply

For safety, locate your refrigerator’s water valve and turn it off. This is often found at the back of the fridge or under the sink.

Step 2: Empty the Dispenser Tray

Remove the tray under the water dispenser. Soak it in warm, soapy water and let it sit for 5–10 minutes. Use a sponge or soft brush to scrub away any residue before rinsing and drying it thoroughly.

Step 3: Clean the External Components

Use a cloth dipped in warm, soapy water to wipe down the dispenser area, including the nozzle and any buttons. For an extra disinfectant boost, use a bit of white vinegar.

Step 4: Flush the Water Lines

Allow the solution to sit in the line for 5–10 minutes to dissolve any mineral deposits or mold.

Step 5: Run Fresh Water Through the System

Reconnect the water supply and turn it on. Place a large bowl under the dispenser and run water through it until you can no longer taste or smell vinegar (usually about 2–3 gallons). This will help rinse away any remaining cleaning solution and ensure the water tastes fresh.

Step 6: Reassemble the Dispenser

Replace the tray and any parts you may have removed, ensuring everything is dry and properly aligned.

Maintenance Tips to Keep It Cleaner, Longer

  1. Wipe Down Regularly: After each use, quickly wipe the dispenser area to remove any water spots or residue.
  2. Use Filtered Water: If your fridge doesn’t have a built-in filter, consider adding an external one to reduce mineral buildup.
  3. Clean Monthly: A monthly cleaning routine can prevent any major buildup and keep your water tasting fresh.
